People often talk about the woes of remodeling and we're here today to hopefully put your mind at ease. Remodeling has it challenges, but many of the myths circling remodels are just that...myths! Keep reading to get our take on some of the more common ones out there.
1. It’s more expensive to hire a contractor than to do it yourself
Homeowners typically look at a project in terms of materials and labor. What often goes overlooked is permitting, engineering, and trade expertise that generally accompanies remodels. Professionals focus on specific tasks day in and day out and know what to expect. Not only do they have the foresight into these overlooked areas of remodeling, they also know how to respond when a project goes sideways. By hiring a contractor for your remodel, you can avoid several potential headaches, and your contractor will get the job done much quicker than if you were to do it yourself.
2. You have to move out while your home is remodeled
While it might be a good idea to move out just to avoid the noise of a remodel, you certainly don’t have to move out. Your contractor might suggest that you move out, but if they are worth their salt, they’ll be able to seal off the remodeled area and keep the mess from entering the rest of your home. Of course, this depends on where the remodel is happening, but regardless, you should never be required to move out during your remodel. Make sure to talk about this with your contractor and identify exactly what he or she plans to do to keep the rest of your home dust and debris free.
3. Remodels always go longer than planned and over budget
This does seem to happen regularly with a remodel, but you need to take a closer look at why this happens before you can say it’s just part of remodeling. When a contractor puts together a bid for a project, he or she has outlined exactly what needs to happen, and when. Sure, surprises can and do happen, but many remodels go over budget due to change orders. In turn, the project goes long. Change orders can significantly disrupt a remodel schedule so it’s very important to work out as many details as you can with your contractor before you sign anything and before work begins.
4. Go with the lowest bid
This is becoming less and less of an issue, likely because enough people have learned their lesson. The lowest bid may seem attractive, obviously due to the cost savings. Now we have to be really careful here because this isn’t always true, but typically, the lowest bid is low for a reason. This price indicates that the contractor is cutting corners somewhere. Maybe low-quality materials are being used, or maybe the job gets rushed and things don’t get done properly. The problem is that you won’t really know until it’s too late. If you want to save some money, it is probably better to revisit the scope of the project and make sure that whatever you do decide to have done, gets done correctly and with quality materials.
